Witness to History: 50th H.S. Reunion for Dobbins High Alumni

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Guess who’s having their 50th High School Reunion!

Actually, there are a number of schools celebrating their 50th this year in Philadelphia–but the spotlight today is on Murrell Dobbins High School at 22nd Street and W. Lehigh Avenue in the heart of North Philadelphia.

In 1972 some 400 bright-eyed and culturally enriched young people graduated from Dobbins, ready to take on the world. Now 50 years later, they’re coming back to celebrate and observe this special occasion.

Among other amazing people who graduated from Dobbins over the years are famed WNBA player and three-time Olympic Gold medal winner Dawn Staley, who is currently the coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team, and two-time winner of the NCAA Division One Basketball title. There is also retired Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson; retired Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers; George Hollinger, aka Hollie Stain, who was the very first professional choreographer for the Philly group “Boys II Men”; retired Philadelphia Sheriff Jewell Williams; Sherri Darden, owner and publisher of ScoopUSA Media Community Newspaper; Ron Hinton, President of the Allegheny West Foundation, a North Philadelphia non-profit helping to revitalize the Allegheny West area of North Philadelphia; Shervon Thompson, the current principal at Dobbins, is also a proud Dobbins Alum and a host of other Dobbins graduates who’ve gone on to do great things in the world.
