One of the latest murders in Philadelphia has a lot of neighbors talking. Some of them are up in arms about the craziness of all the killings over the last couple of years in the City of Brotherly Love.
On June 24th, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a group of teens and a man named James Lambert got into a verbal altercation that turned into a physical altercation. Being outnumbered, the 73 year old victim succumbed to his injuries. The group of teens, of which it seemed to have been at least five or 6 of them, beat the elderly man with street cones and other items until he became unconscious. He died later at an area hospital.
When I first heard the news later in the day on June 24th, I kept repeating two questions to myself:
Why were 13 and 14 year olds, and even a 10-year old, out, unaccompanied by any adults, at 2:00 a.m.?
The second question I kept asking myself was, where were their parents? Truthfully, I also asked myself, what was a 73 year old doing out at 2:00 a.m.?
Someone reminded me that there could have been any number of reasons that James Lambert was out on June 24th in the wee hours of the morning. He’s a grown man, and grown folk don’t have a curfew. He would have been on his way to a job for all we know. Because its summertime and some people don’t have air-conditioners. If Mr. Lambert didn’t have an air conditioner, he may have come outside to try and cool off.
