The West Powelton Drummers celebrated 31 years in action with a parade, block party, and street renaming in honor of founder Elsie Wise on Saturday, June 25th. There were energizing performances by the West Powelton Drummers that drew neighbors from the surrounding blocks. Speakers included Mrs. Wise’s grandson Antoine Mapp, Patty Jackson, Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, and Senator Vincent Hughes.
Mrs. Elise Wise led and served the West Powelton community all of her adult life until her passing in 2020. She brought resources, support, and positive activities to the children of her community and fought for affordable housing amid rapidly developing West Philadelphia neighborhoods.
The atmosphere at this event was very energetic, thanks to the Drum Line performances. Fans of the West Powelton Drummers and neighbors celebrating Elsie Wise gathered for the official street renaming ceremony held at Preston & Filbert Streets, where Mrs. Wise lived and founded the West Powelton Drummers.
The West Powelton Steppers Drill Team & Drum Line, under the direction of Mrs. Elsie Wise was established in 1991. The goal of the award-winning performance group is to give West Powelton children an opportunity to learn performance skills, develop discipline and leadership, as well as provide them with resources and support in a positive community-based activity. They’re one of the first drill teams to perform at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, and the first drill team to compete in the Battles of the Bands. Today, they are also known as “The Sixers Stixers,” the official drum line of the Philadelphia 76ers, led by Antoine Mapp.
