Voting Rights Still Under Fire

The battle to preserve Voting Rights for Americans is still ongoing. Democratic lawmakers say they are not giving up on the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and other legislation meant to enhance voting opportunities rather than destroy them. Right about now, it looks like the Voting Rights Act and other voting legislation will be reintroduced in this new legislative session; because, unfortunately, it failed to get by the Republicans last week. 

Here’s what happened: The United States Senate failed to pass new Voting Rights on January 19, 2022. Now the question is, where does that leave Democratic Senate lawmakers? At this point, Democrats are working to regroup and come up with another plan to push forward on protecting Voting rights that already exist and come up with some other voting laws that can work for both sides of the aisle. There was an emotional debate in the Senate last week that touched on racism and past civil rights struggles. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, the Republicans had their way and filibustered the voting rights legislation. As hard as they tried, Democrats failed to convince their more moderate members to change the body’s rules to overcome that blockade, putting the passage of future Democratic-backed legislation in question. 

This latest setback was extremely tough on Democrats, including President Joe Biden. These setbacks come as the Democratic party faces some hurdles with the upcoming 2022 midterms. Civil rights groups and activists are raising concerns over what they see as the Biden administration’s failure to meet the urgency of the moment.
