Update on Pennsylvania’s Abortion Laws

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court made the decision Friday, June 24, 2022, to roll back the legalization of abortion in America, what does that mean?

From what we know thus far, it sounds like it will mean different things in different states. As I have continued to have this opportunity to write a Civics 101 column for the SCOOP, one of the things I’ve come to understand more clearly, is that there can be laws that are made at a national level. Then, depending on what state you live in, state lawmakers can seemingly “overrule” the National laws. Sounds a bit strange–doesn’t it?

Pretty much right now, that’s what’s happening with the Roe versus Wade ruling. My goal in this column is to share information about what can or cannot–happen in Pennsylvania in terms of aborting a fetus.

First of all, our readers should know that our Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, and the Democratic candidate running to be the next Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro are on the same page of agreement. They have both expressed support for keeping Pennsylvania’s abortion laws as they are. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf released a statement, saying women “are safe here in the commonwealth.”

Governor Tom Wolf released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and the dismantling of the landmark Roe v. Wade, which had protected access to abortion:

“First and most importantly, it is critical that everyone understands that abortion services are available and unharmed in Pennsylvania by today’s Supreme Court action. Providers may still provide reproductive health care services, and patients should continue the health care plan they’ve developed with their physicians.
