Tools to build Confidence and Self-Reliance (Pt.3)

Reading Time: < 1 minute

When Black children spin a globe for the first time, their eyes widen and light up with amazement and en- thusiasm. It is at this moment, that they see the entire planet for the first time. It is at this moment, that they see and experience a glimpse of just how huge the world is. It is at this moment, that they see how minute their actual geographical location is compared to the rest of the world. The earth’s circumference (distance all the way around the equator) is 24,901 miles (40,075 kilometers), and its diameter (distance from one side to the other through the earth’s center) is 7,926 miles (about 12,756 kilometers).

When our children spin the globe, they are implementing a re-enactment of how planet Earth spins on its axis once every (24) hours each day. Our children come to realize that the speed of the earth’s spin is about (1,000) miles per hour.

When peering at the globe, our beautiful children realize just how much water there is on planet Earth. They come to the realization that water covers about 71% of the earth’s surface and that 97% of that water is found in the gigantic oceans.

Examining the globe also gives our children the insight and inspiration to target where they want to travel.
