The Violence, like Cancer has spread the Nation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I haven’t written about all the ongoing violence in Philadelphia for a while. That’s not because I don’t care about what’s happening on our streets. It’s because aside from the violence, there’s still so many other important news stories to write about. I also remind myself all the time. I’m only one of the journalists who writes for the SCOOP. That means there are others from the SCOOP team who can and do also write about what’s happening in too many of our communities in terms of crime.

Doesn’t matter where I live. My heart will always belong to Philadelphia. My adult children and my grandchildren reside in Philadelphia. Many of my colleagues, close friends and associates reside in Philadelphia or other parts of Pennsylvania. I will never stop caring about my number one city.

All of that shared, I’m down in North Carolina. My adult daughter and son both still reside in Pennsylvania. On the evening of Good Friday, my daughter sent me a text message that read: “Philadelphia is off the chain. The weekend hasn’t even started good, and the shooting and killing is crazy Mom.”

Twenty four people were shot in Philly between Thursday and Good Friday. Victims were between the ages 18 up to 65.

Mayor Kenney wrote on his Twitter account, “The spate of shootings was “devastating” and “makes me not just heartbroken, but angry.”

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that the “violence and trauma of these incidents extend beyond those directly affected and permeate into the very fabric of our communities.”
