A Flag of Our Own
“Show me a race or nation without a flag, and I will show you a race of people without any pride. In song and mimicry, they have said, “Every race has a flag but the coon.” How true! But, that was said of us four years ago. They can’t say that now.” Marcus Garvey
First UNIA International Convention 1920
Today we as a Black race continue to protest, struggle, fight, organize, demand, mobilize, march, and agitate for our rights to a greater quality of life and to live on this earth as free people. Every second of the days that pass, we fall victim to racist health care and medical practices, deliberate miseducation within public schools, Black mass incarceration, police murder and brutality, corrupt police, bias and unjust judicial systems, economic exploitation, racial profiling, predatory lending, gentrification, racially polarized voting, corrupt elected officials, insecure jobs, racist wage disparity, miscarriages of justice and abundances of cruelties.
As we join hands, hearts, and minds to confront the immoral powers that keep us separated, neutralized, and oppressed, there is one consistent symbol that raises high amongst the organized and mobilized Black masses. That symbol is the RED, BLACK, AND GREEN FLAG!
When that Red, Black, and Green Flag is raised, it is understood that the power of Black people to achieve liberation and self-determination lies within our own grasp. When that beautiful Flag is raised, it symbolizes that freedom and self-determination cannot and will not be given to us by white people or any other non-Black people. When that Red, Black, and Green Flag is waving high, it sends a message that liberation must be won through the self-sustained exercise of Black Power, generated by Black people only!
