During the height of the Coronavirus pandemic, when so-called “non-essential” businesses across Pennsylvania were forced to shut down, is when I first met a woman by the name of Anne Turner. She is the President of the 63rd Street Business Association.
Since then, she has formed another organization, the Pennsylvania Professional Image Alliance (PPIA). A group of Barbershop and Beauty Salon owners who banned together during the pandemic to work with each other, share information about grants and other resources, and provide emotional support during a difficult time.
Anne Turner stated, “We have about 200 people who are in the beauty industry from various locations across the state, affiliated with our new organization. We’ve been able to work on the Covid Initiative and identify some financial resources. We offer weekly webinars, updating our business owners on different resources and technology to strengthen their business because there will be life after the pandemic. I feel like our organization has been a success thus far. I get phone calls every day from various members or text messages. We are very unified. While we have barbers and beauticians involved from across the state, our nucleus is from Philadelphia.“
