President Joe Biden said Thursday, June 30th, that the Supreme Court’s decision ending a constitutional right to abortion is “destabilizing” and that he supports changing Senate rules to codify nationwide abortion protections.
“America is better positioned to lead the world than we ever have been,” Biden said. “But one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the Supreme Court of United States in overruling not only Roe v. Wade but essentially challenging the right to privacy.” The President added, “I could understand why the American people are frustrated because of what the Supreme Court did.” The President said he would support changing the Senate filibuster rules, which require 60 votes to pass most legislation, to allow bringing a bill extending nationwide abortion protections to pass by simple majority. The President also said it would likely require voters to send additional Democratic Senators to Washington to get it done.
Meanwhile, I had the opportunity to interview Chiquita Brooks LaSure, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator for the White House. Brooks LaSure stated, “We are now responsible for overseeing coverage for over 150 million people all across the country, through Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act. The President and the Vice President both spoke last Friday and really were trying to emphasize that everyone deserves the right to control their health and bodies. This is something that certainly Black women and people have not had throughout their history, and we are all frankly very concerned that the SCOTUS decision has really set us way back–in terms of rights–for the American people. What we are laser-focused on right now is clarifying the landscape. And what people’s rights are right now. We have a website, reproductiverights.gov, and that’s a place people can go to really make sure they understand what all of their rights are
