Tann: Pillar in community retires after 25 yrs

Reading Time: 2 minutes

City Worker Crystal Tann and my sister, from another mother, says farewell to politics after serving 25 years in the business. Our bond goes three generations strong—the youngest of 9 children, Crystal came into my life when I was a kid. She used to walk to school with my sister Teena, later modeled with my sister Vanessa, and worked with me at State Senator Vincent Hughes’ office. She was his scheduler, and I was his Director of Public Relations and Communications –we worked well together booking media engagements.
She then moved on to work with City Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., which is where she said her final goodbye.
“First, I give thanks to God for allowing me the health and strength to have worked for 54 years of age. I just think retirement means one door has closed, and there’s a new journey with possibly two more that will open.” She added, “I will continue to help keep the community informed this time through the Outreach and Overcomers Ministry at Vine Memorial Baptist Church (659 N. 56th Street).
When asked, “What did you learn from which two powerful politicians?” Crystal responded, “I’m blessed to have worked with so many great politicians. Senator Hughes taught me to connect the dots.” She explained, “On my first day as his scheduler, he requested
3 meetings. My desk had a rolodex already there when I sat down. When he called me a few hours later to make some calls, I went through the Rolodex equipped with the names and organizations, only to find a BLANK ROLODEX! I learned to connect the dots that day.
“Then, there’s Councilman Curtis Jones, who recognized my passion for helping Seniors. He said, Tann, turn over the desk until you get the results to assist those in need. In our city, it’s not just about potholes and trash pick-up. It’s about maintaining a quality of life for our brothers and sisters and REALLY SHOW YOU CARE!”
Crystal was recently honored and acknowledged by Councilman Jones and Council of the City for her deep commitment to the well-being of seniors. She is a pillar in the community who has earned her stripes and will always be remembered for her hard work and dedication to the community. Crystal Tann was presented a resolution as a token of admiration for her serving the City of Philadelphia and its legislative body.
As Crystal embarks on her new journey, it’s clear that her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire. –Congratulations Crystal Tann!!!
