Star Power came to Northwest Philly’s Mighty50th Ward, Stumping for Votes for Kamala Harris

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Mayor Cherelle Parker was out stumping hard for votes for Vice President Kamala Harris over this past weekend in Philadelphia. In her own ward’s backyard, the mighty 50th Ward in the Northwest section of the city, Mayor Parker stood outside in front of a beautifully painted wall mural baring the name Kamala on it, as she stood side by side with television and film star Kerri Washington and a couple of other Hollywood stars, along with PA State Senator Sharif Street, PA State Rep. Joanna McClinton, and PA State Rep. Morgan Cephas. It was all about “Get out the vote.”

Here’s some of what the Mayor had to say. “Our keystone state of Pennsylvania is the path to the White House, the keystone state. Our Commonwealth and, of course, our city of Philadelphia. I want to start with some math. In 2016, the other guy won the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by 44,000 votes. In 2020, the Biden-Harris team came back and won Pennsylvania by 80,000 votes. This is about math, and there was one common denominator in that. The city of Philadelphia and our Southeastern PA sister counties, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties all increased their voter turnout. We are here today standing in front of this beautiful mural, signifying that we will use every tool possible to turn out the vote, turn out Philly. Why is this important to me? It’s about the kitchen table and bread and butter. Right now, access to equal opportunity is the foundation of America’s promise, and we need to make sure that it is available for every American, every Pennsylvanian, and every Philadelphian who desires it. Your race, class, socio-economic status, zip code, religion, sexual orientation, or identity should not be the determining factor about whether or not you get access to an economic opportunity to put yourself on the path to self-sufficiency. So we are here on this day to send a message that we are truly working to become one Philly, a united City, and making Kamala Harris the 47th President of the United States of America.”

Kerri Washington stated, “I am so grateful to be here. We are here primarily because we understand the importance of Philadelphia in this election. We understand the importance of Pennsylvania in this election. We are here because we want to do everything that we can do. I want to do everything that I can to protect this democracy at this moment. I love this democracy. I love being American. I’m not saying that we are a perfect country, but I know we have the potential to continue to walk toward a better union. If I am part of making that dream come true, not because I’m Kerri Washington, not because I played Olivia Pope on TV, but because I’m an American because I am a mother. Because I’m a daughter, because I’m a citizen, because I’m a granddaughter of immigrants. Because I’m someone who cares about this country, because I believe in my right to choose, because I believe we all deserve clean air to breathe. Because I believe my kids deserve to get a good and safe education. I believe that my parents deserve to have good health care regardless of how much money I make. I believe in equality and justice for all of us. That is why I am here, and that is why I am here in support of Kamala Harris.”

Kerri Washington went on to say, “Kamala Harris has been very clear. The Harris/Walz ticket has said very clearly that they want to be leaders for all of us. For all Americans, not just for the ones who vote for them. Not just for millionaires. Not just for corporations. They want to make sure that all of us have what we need to live a life of Liberty and Freedom. They want to make sure we can afford food. We can afford gas. We can have our voices heard. We can make decisions about our bodies. We are in a country right now that is at a turning point. We are at a moment where we can defend the soul of this nation, and that’s going to happen here in Pennsylvania. That’s going to happen here in Philadelphia, and that’s why we’re here.”

While Democrats brought major star power to Philadelphia over the last number of days, Donald Trump’s campaign has been stomping hard in Pennsylvania for votes as well.

Former President Trump rallied voters in Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon.

In his remarks, Trump addressed his economic agenda and targeted Vice President Harris and the Biden administration over inflation, rising costs and taxes on Social Security, overtime, and tips, the campaign announced.

Monday night, October 28, after this edition of the SCOOP has already been printed, former President Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen will be at the Peter Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University to drum up more support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

All we can say at the SCOOP is that it’s voting time. Get ready to go to the polls and vote on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The polls open at 7 am and remain open until 8 pm.
