Some History We Should Not Repeat in the African American Community, Part I

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s Black History Month, and as always, we at SCOOP USA Media would be thrilled to share our history 365 days a year. The reality is the SCOOP printed edition is published once a week. Then we have a SCOOP Online edition which is published once a week. We have ScoopVIZION, a monthly newspaper for and about Black-owned businesses. We have the “Inside Scoop” Radio program, and we have a SCOOP YouTube channel. Even with all of that, we still couldn’t tell every Black history story that needs to be told.

Having said that. I can declare the SCOOP will share our stories as often as possible.

Today in my column, I’m taking a look back at the history of African Americans and drugs in Philadelphia and how it essentially came to be that drugs were introduced into our communities. The drug story is not a glamorous part of our history, but I believe–that if you learn from past mistakes, perhaps you won’t be tempted to repeat the same mistakes. If you do, you will only end up with the same results.

The below information was gleaned from the addictionscenter.com website. President Nixon launched the War on Drugs campaign in the 1970s, and its legacy still exists today. The campaign attempted to bring attention and awareness to the impact drugs have on the American people. Arguably, benefits such as Nixon’s signing of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970 have helped officials classify and regulate dangerous drugs. The campaign helped people gain education on the side effects of drugs like LSD and Heroin and take them more seriously.
