April 20th was a glorious day in Philadelphia for the Solar Industry. At City Hall, The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) joined City leadership and the Philadelphia Green Capital Corp to announce that 900+ property owners across Philadelphia have gone solar through Solarize Philly, with a goal to reach 1000 properties by the end of the month (Earth Month). Since their initial launch, Solarize Philly has invested $15MM+ in communities across Philadelphia. Along with that, the ‘Share the Sun program’ announced their goal to bring rooftop solar to 100 additional low-to moderate-income households.
Alon Abramson, the Director of Residential Programs at PEA, oversees the Solarize Philly program. Abramson stressed the importance of investing in–not only our planet, but our communities as well. “This Earth Week, PEA is excited to illustrate how Philadelphia is investing in our planet by investing in clean energy in our communities,” said Abramson. “Local rooftop solar is an investment with holistic benefits for both our planet and communities — generating electricity with clean energy sources like Rooftop Solar is one of the clearest pathways to meet our goals.”
Solarize Philly is a key component of the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, a $1 billion, 10-year investment in energy efficiency and clean energy projects to create 10,000 jobs. Launched in 2016 in partnership with City Council President Darrell Clarke and led by PEA, the Campaign has deployed more than $291MM in projects and created nearly 2,500 jobs.
