Singer, songwriter, and now author Corinthia Nicole Riggs

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Born and reared in the Logan section of Philadelphia, Corinthia learned at an early age to value a strict Christian upbringing. Her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Laurence M. Riggs Sr. along with her older brother would sing in church, coordinate youth events and trips that were Christ-centered yet full of fun. Seeing her parents in a long-lasting and loving marriage has encouraged her to see what is possible when God is at the core.

Over the years, Corinthia has used the example of her parents and advice they’d give to launch different endeavors. Whether it was singing or songwriting, she has used her gift to glorify the kingdom. Now, Corinthia is embarking upon a brand new project that is totally out of her comfort zone.

“Golden Nuggets: A Single Parent Journal” is Corinthia’s debut book into the world of raising a child as a single parent. She was raised by two loving parents but became pregnant as a young adult and found herself single and rearing a child of her own.

We wanted to know more about the book and Corinthia’s reason for such a book at this particular time. She sat down with us and shared her story.

Sherri: Was there a main reason you decided to write this book?

Corinthia: My main reason was to reach out to the single fathers and mothers who feel they are alone or there is no book out there for us. I also wanted to let the world know we are not bad people and stop looking at single parents as a bad thing. I want to be able to give out resources and encouragement to these parents.

Sherri: How was the idea birthed?

Corinthia: What prepared me to write this journal for single parents was a conversation with my girlfriend about my personal life as a single parent. I was not up for it. I could talk but didn’t know if I could write a book. I didn’t even think people would feel it was relevant to them. She convinced me of its importance and that indeed, others would be blessed by it. So I told her I would do it but would keep it small. Well, that did not turn out as I thought it would. What once was a 10-page journal is now a 239-page journal. What are the odds? Lol!

Sherri: What part of the book proved to be the most difficult to write and why?

Corinthia: “Watching your words” is my hardest to write because this was my main downfall as a parent, woman, and human. I, at times, still have to watch myself because my mind likes to fall back into old habits. But I remember what God says I am, and I just keep pushing. Now the other hard part was telling my story about this because most people would not believe I would say anything negative about myself, because I am the encouragement for so many people.

Sherri: Which part of the book was enjoyable to write and why?

Corinthia: Daughter First Love is my favorite because I am a true Daddy’s girl!! I will always be, no matter my age. I have a great bond with my dad. So yes, this was easy and exciting to write. I believe all children should have a special bond with their fathers.

Sherri: Please give us one tip that is not in your book that parents can implement?

Corinthia: Jesus & Therapy is a must for you and your children. I believe in therapy!

Sherri: How has your faith played a role in rearing your son and writing this book?

Corinthia: I said while he was in my stomach, that he will never be a burden. He will walk this life with me and see what it takes to be successful. We recite “we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us” daily while riding to school. I am glad and grateful that God chose me to be my son’s mother.

Sherri: Being as transparent as you desire, what areas are you still working on as a single parent?

Corinthia: Being patient, watching my words, dating, and being understanding. Especially since I am not a boy. We have to learn from each other.

Sherri: Would you please share a testimony that includes both you and your son and how it changed your journey over time?

Corinthia: We have Jr and Mommy moments. Basically, we go on dates and learn from each other. We travel, go for walks, go to different restaurants or just take a drive. We would also try to do videos once a month on social media with our moments. We did have a moment during covid where we became a little distant and needed to go to counseling to fix the issues and get back on the same page. We are still a work in progress because I have to realize he is becoming a man soon. It’s been a little hard letting him go. It’s hard for both of us.

Sherri: In what way did your family help you as a single parent? What lessons did you learn throughout?

Corinthia: My parents were a Giant help in this journey. I truly believe it takes a village to raise a child and children. I didn’t want them to know how hard it was, but I had to give in to my pride and ask for their help. I felt like I disappointed them, but they said let that go and let’s raise this little man.

Sherri: Please share your favorite motto or scripture? Why is it your favorite?

Corinthia: My motto is to: Put a smile on your face to put a smile on someone else’s face because you never know what they are going through. It’s ok to help one another in any shape or form. We were put on earth to help one another. Everyone goes through rough times and needs someone to lean on or to talk to. So be that light in someone’s life.

Sherri: If someone wants to get in touch with you, please share your contact info.

Corinthia: I would love to hear from people interested in sharing their story of parenting (single or not). My website is GoldenNuggetsSP.com. Facebook Group – Golden Nuggets of a Single Parent | Facebook Page – Psalmist Corinthia Nicole | Instagram: @purepsalmist
