Jeff Brown says his father was a Mason, and he recalls being a young boy and watching his father as he would get dressed and prepare to go to Mason events. That always stuck with him over the years. Fast-forward to the late 1980s, through the nineties, and up until now, Jeff Brown has been present for many a Dr. Martin Luther King National Holiday events where members of the Masons were front and center during the program. That in and of itself bought back fond memories of the times he spent with his late father. Brown stated, “My father was a Mason, and I remember being curious about it as a young boy.”
He added, “The Masons aren’t going to tell you much. They’re sworn to secrecy. But the Masons always stuck in my mind.”
Over the years, when I would attend events in honor of Dr. King and members of the Masons organization would be there, I always gravitated toward them. I have four sons, and often I would have them accompany me to those programs where Masons played a key role. My youngest son Scott probably accompanied me to more programs where Masons were, more than my other three sons. Probably for the last fifteen to twenty years, I always attended Dr. King Day services. We always look forward to that. As time has gone by, I have found that there is a lot of the good, charitable and philanthropic work that the Prince Hall Free Masons do, and I was always fond that I was their partner for many years.
Jeff Brown went on to say, “There were times when I would joke around with them, and I would say, I feel like an adopted brother, like an honorary brother.” One day after saying that in the presence of some of my friends who are Masons, one of them said, “You don’t have to be an honorary brother.”
