Philadelphia recently witnessed a powerful celebration of Black excellence and historical contributions at the “Shining a Light on Black History” program. The event, held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, was coordinated by Veda Brown of Black Gospel Promo and the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Salvation Army Kroc Center, which hosted the event at 4200 Wissahickon Avenue.
The program’s goal was to honor distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to the city and beyond. This
year’s honorees included current Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, former Mayor Rev. Dr. Wilson Goode, Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller (Senior Pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church), and Dr. Steven Ford of Eastern University. Additionally, the Philadelphia Black Basketball Hall of Fame and the Cool WURLD Organization were recognized for their commitment to youth mentorship and empowerment.
Hosted by Rev. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake, the evening began with a warm welcome from Major Jason Knaggs, Kroc Center Administrator and Pastor. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake, President of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, followed with introductory remarks, setting a tone of reverence and celebration. The spiritual foundation of the event was established with an opening prayer and scripture reading by Lt. Joequetta Sorrells, Congregation Life Officer, and Pastor. Pastor Edwards, Fields of Ambassador Seed of Love Church, led attendees in a stirring rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
The honorees were recognized in a series of heartfelt tributes. Former Mayor Rev. Dr. Wilson Goode, Philadelphia’s first Black mayor, was the first to be honored. He reflected on the significance of the moment and expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. Next was Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller, whose charismatic response resonated with attendees. He acknowledged the efforts of many who have contributed to progress before leading his group in an uplifting musical performance.
Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, the first woman to hold the city’s highest office, shared her personal journey, recalling the influence of her grandparents and emphasizing her commitment to equipping Philadelphia with the tools for success. Dr. Steven Ford was then recognized for his exceptional contributions to the music industry. In an emotional speech, he credited his wife and faith for his journey, and he followed his remarks with a performance featuring Eastern University’s Angels of Harmony Gospel Choir, directed by Scot Stevens of Beloved St. John Evangelistic Church.
The final honorees, representatives from the Philadelphia Basketball Black Hall of Fame and Cool WURLD Organization, were applauded for their dedication to providing mentorship and opportunities for youth. Their impact in shaping young lives through positive engagement was widely celebrated.
The program featured outstanding performances by the Eastern University Angels of Harmony Gospel Choir, Rev. Dr. Alyn E. Waller & Friends, and the renowned Philadanco! – Philadelphia School of Dance Arts. The audience was captivated by these artistic expressions, which highlighted the depth and richness of Black culture and history.
The evening concluded with remarks from Community Engagement Coordinator Veda Brown, who expressed gratitude to all participants and attendees. Janiyah Sorrells, a dedicated soldier, closed the event with a moving prayer.
With a packed venue, the atmosphere was one of love, unity, and celebration. Influencers from various industries stayed long after the program to network, exchange information, and capture the moment through photos.
“Shining a Light on Black History” was not just an event but a testament to the ongoing contributions of Black leaders, artists, and trailblazers who continue to shape history in Philadelphia and beyond.
