Philadelphia, PA – A capacity crowd of senior citizens from Philadelphia was celebrated at the “9th Annual Senior Citizens Pre-Thanksgiving Awards Luncheon” on Saturday, November 23, 2024, hosted by Greater Enon Missionary Baptist Church in North Philadelphia. Approximately 60 seniors from Philadelphia were treated to a free, professionally catered luncheon prepared by Chef Larry Turner of TNT Caterers.
Gail Johnson was selected as the 2024 Senior Citizen Community Service Leadership Award recipient. Johnson was celebrated for her exemplary volunteerism at her senior residence community in Lansdowne, PA, and for serving youth and adults via community programs and activities in North Philadelphia.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 10% of senior citizens 60 years old and older living at home experience neglect.
“Because many seniors are overlooked, underappreciated, scammed, abandoned by family, and abused, I wanted to change that narrative. For 9 of the 11 years serving as Senior Pastor, our church ministry has set aside the Saturday before Thanksgiving to celebrate senior citizens. If not for the sacrifices and adversities our seniors had to endure, many of our modern-day joys, freedoms, and societal advances we cherish would not exist,” expressed Rev. Michael Robinson, Senior Pastor-Greater Enon Missionary Baptist Church and Commissioner for the Governor’s Advisory Commission for African American Affairs/Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. “Our Annual Senior Citizens Pre-Thanksgiving Awards Luncheon is our modest way of bringing local seniors and multigenerational residents together for a free holiday event–where folks can enjoy a safe, festive, soulful Thanksgiving dinner.
Rev. Sharon White, a senior citizens community advocate and member of the Fellowship of Women Clergy, was the featured guest speaker. Sponsors of the luncheon included AARP and Keystone First Pennsylvania.
