PA State Senator Vincent Hughes is once again demonstrating with his actions that he cares about all people–babies and children, teens, the elderly, men, and yes, women.
Saturday, September 7, 2024, with the Market Street El as the backdrop, at 4601 Market Street, Senator Hughes and his team collected feminine hygiene products for women who really need them. The senator stated, “Thousands of women and girls each day are missing work or school because they can’t afford the rising cost of feminine hygiene products. I am pleased to partner with No More Secrets Mind Body Spirit, Inc., Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Divine Nine, and other community organizations to collect these items for Philadelphians who struggle to afford them.”
“Period poverty has too long been ignored, but we’ve begun to make progress on a subject that many people still don’t want to talk about,” Hughes said. “We want to collect these products for people who need them, but we also want to raise the consciousness of the community to bring the issue out of the shadows.”
Hughes and his staff and team collected new, unopened packages of sanitary napkins, tampons, panty liners, menstrual cups, and other personal products. Those who missed the event, guess what? You can still donate items through the No More Secrets Amazon Wish List, which can be found at SenatorHughes.com
Senator Hughes stressed again, “These products are very expensive. They are not cheap. Because of various economic conditions, some young ladies and women don’t necessarily have the funding to access the products; that’s why we need organizations like No More Secrets to provide these products for our young ladies. Far too many of our young ladies are utilizing newspapers, toilet paper, and all kinds of things like that to deal with something that is a normal bodily function, and they should not be in a situation like that. It’s up to us to step up for them. We’ve done this before. I think the last time we did this last year, we drew in 75,000 to a hundred thousand products. We believe in people. We believe in the human family, and we know that the human family, by definition, is kind and can be supportive and can be empathetic. It’s one of those things that’s not complicated, but it needs to be done to make sure that our young ladies get–exactly what they need.”
I couldn’t let Senator Hughes get away from me without asking him to speak on the upcoming presidential election on November 5. Here’s what he had to say about that. “The thing that has risen to the top of the public conversation is how we continue to fund our mass transit system in Southeastern Pennsylvania with SEPTA, and there are several systems all over the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that are suffering financially, and we’re trying to work through different mechanisms they need so that we can get them the resources that they need so they can improve the services they’re already providing, make important investments in services, pay the workers what they need to be paid, to make sure that they’re doing what has to be done.
The big thing that is top of everybody’s mind is the election, and we’re trying to make sure that people are preparing, that they have the information, that they know early voting will start in less than thirty days. I believe that is a very viable process to utilize to vote. It’s very accurate. It’s very easy. You can do it in convenience. There are a number of voting access centers being opened all across the city of Philadelphia. We already have one in West Philadelphia, at 41st and Market Streets, and there’s opening up across the city. Thank you, Commissioner Omar Sabir. We want to make sure that people vote. We want to make sure people are voting all up and down the ballot. Of course, the presidential candidates are at the top. Then you have U.S. Senate races, U.S. Congress races, you have State Representative races. We want to make sure that people are paying attention to every level of the ballot. Please come out and vote. This thing is real. This thing is relevant. This election can truly make a difference.”
Utilize your power. You have this power called voting. Make sure you do.
