I don’t know about anybody else, but to me, to be given an award under the name and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a big deal. So as I started my interview with Scott Charles, the Trauma Outreach Manager for Temple University Hospital and Director of TUH’s Cradle to Grave Program, that’s how I started, because he was presented an award on January 4, 2023, during a press conference to outline all the plans for the 28th annual Dr. King Day of Service.Â
The actual award is named after the late U.S. Senator Harris Wofford. Wofford was indeed a friend and supporter of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and he marched with him during the height of the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney presented the 25th annual Harris Wofford Active Citizenship Award to Scott Charles, Trauma Outreach Manager for Temple University Hospital, during the press conference at Girard College last week. Kenney said, in part, the award was being presented to Charles “for your tireless support of gun violence victims and their families and your ongoing support of the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service.”
