PHILADELPHIA—Saturday, April 27, 2024, with the scenic, relaxing atmosphere of the Discover Center as a backdrop, SUMCEP held its 3rd Annual Sexual Assault and Awareness Event.
SUMCEP, the philanthropic arm of ScoopUSA Media, felt the space created an ideal setting to open a discussion on a topic that is still very taboo in our society today. The Discovery Center, located in bucolic Fairmount Park at 3401 Reservoir Drive in Philadelphia
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and given the strides made in the digital age coupled with the increasing use of artificial intelligence, it seemed an ideal time to add the digital aspects of sexual awareness to the discussion. With children younger and younger accessing the internet for school projects and entertainment, the key components here are limiting access and supervision for younger children, teens, and young adolescents, ensuring that posting something on the internet cannot be rescinded, and sexting and sharing inappropriate photos is dangerous. Predators have become adept at grooming unsuspecting, inexperienced, and naive social media users.
“Sexual assault continues to be a taboo topic in our communities, but we won’t stop educating those communities–so we can protect the most vulnerable. The more we share, the more we know and when we see red flags, we will do something about it! On Saturday, we were heard, and for everyone who listened, they are now armed with a toolbox of resources that will help end sexual assault as well as help battle those suicidal thoughts,” said author, filmmaker, and motivational speaker Tiona Brown.
Trauma is at the root of most issues that affect teens and young adults. It shows itself in destructive behaviors such as substance abuse, self-harm, eating disorders, mental health issues, and a myriad of other maladies that leave lifelong scares beyond those left by the initial act of sexual abuse. Hosting intimate informative events such as this is one of the ways in which SUMCEP continues to honor its commitment to the community it serves.
Thank you to all the vendors who participated in this event and all the women who had the courage to show up and be a part of this very important and necessary discussion.
