The pandemic indeed took a toll on small businesses around the country. However, it is also true that the pan- demic provided opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand into new areas. This week we take a look at two such SCOOP advertisers.
Steven Riddles, Jr is the proprietor of SRJ Cleaning Services, and he pivoted the challenges of the Pandemic into a successful business.
A North Philadelphia native, Steven received a degree in Geology from West Chester University. He is no stranger to hard work. In fact, he started his business happenstance. Steven holds down two jobs in addition to being an entrepreneur. He is a Health Inspector for the City of Philadelphia, and he works for Ask For Tutoring, a position he has had for several years. He tutors all grade levels in math and science. While at the tutoring company, the owner casually mentioned that her car- pets needed cleaning. My mother had recently relocated to Florida and left behind a carpet cleaning machine that she could not take with her,” said Steven. He cleaned the carpets, and the owner of the tutoring company was so pleased with his work–she suggested that he open a cleaning business.
It wasn’t until the Pandemic shut everything down that Riddles brought those thoughts to fruition. He said, “During the shutdown was when the thought came to me that I can do this!” After googling how to start a small business and using gift cards that he received for Christmas to obtain the proper licenses, he proceeded to procure clients and is now a full-service cleaning maintenance company. His background as a Health Inspector for the City of Philadelphia only adds to his knowledge base. He says, “I know what to look for when it comes to a place being clean.”
In the beginning, most of his clients came by word-of-mouth referrals, Steven Riddles, Jr. but eventually, he realized the benefit of steady advertisement, and his journey with SCOOP began.
Steven is not just an advertiser. SRJ provides cleaning services at the Scoop offices. They do an amazing job cleaning our entire office, including the windows. Window cleaning is a service that often is no longer provided by many cleaning companies.
Steven wants to see the continued growth of his business with the ultimate goal of furnishing employment for youth as a positive alternative to life on the streets. He stated, “I’m passionate about seeing young people succeed.”
