Reading Time: 2 minutes

With the state of the economy, single mothers struggling, and just about everyone trying to make ends meet, ScoopUSA Media’s philanthropic arm, ScoopUSA Media Community Education Program (SUMCEP), gave back to the community it serves by hosting a Diaper/Hygiene Giveaway at the media company’s headquarters at 1354 West Girard Avenue in Philadelphia.

Mothers and expectant mothers gathered at the community center sharing due dates, birth weights, and children’s first and tidbits only mothers could understand and share with other mothers.

Each woman was greeted at the door by Shawmell Johnson, SUMCEP Vice President, Sherri Horsey-Darden, ScoopUSA Publisher, and volunteer staff, ushered into the festive ballooned filled community center where they snacked on healthy snacks, drinks, and sweet treats, while children played at their feet.

Shawmell Johnson shared that the Community Diaper/Giveaway was an event she wanted to host to celebrate her birthday. As a counselor and therapist, she has observed many families and knows firsthand the need for support, and wanted to do something that would be impactful. She also took this opportunity to introduce upcoming programs that SUMCEP will offer to work with women and families, particularly mother/baby sessions, postpartum group sessions, and other group/individual sessions focusing on wellness and mental health. We are all aware of the dire need for services that many families have as we are learning to “Live Beyond Covid.” Mental health and wellness are at higher rates than ever, and people need support financially and men- tally.

Horsey-Darden said, “It’s great to tell people’s stories, but it’s so much more rewarding to be able to give back to your community. I’m a product of this community. I was raised in this neighborhood. I operate my business here. I make it my business to give back when possible.”

A Stylish diaper bag filled with diapers, baby wipes, hand sanitizers, and various other toiletries–was given to each attendee. “I’m so happy. This is the bag that I wanted,” remarked one especially delighted woman.

In addition to the diaper bags, SUMCEP raffled off six baby strollers and two bassinets. Each woman in atten- dance was eligible for the raffle, and each of the eight gifts was awarded.

THE SUMCEP Community Center is available to rent for community events of 25 persons or less and is an ideal setting for training sessions, conferences, and meetings.
