Saluting Community Leader Regina Rhea Smith

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For my last Women’s History Month Salute, we are shining the spotlight on Regina Rhea Smith. Truly she is another hard-working, smart working community leader who makes a positive difference every chance she can to help uplift her area of the city, known as the Allegheny West neighborhood of North Philadelphia. For all her labor, Regina Rhea Smith is another of our city’s “unsung sheroes” who deserves some accolades for her work.

Regina Rhea Smith was born and raised in West Philadelphia. She attended and graduated from Girls High School and went to Penn State University, where she studied to become a registered nurse. Ultimately, she completed her studies to earn her RN license in Philadelphia at Community College in 1979.

Upon earning her degree, her first place of employment as a registered nurse was at Presbyterian Hospital, where she worked for quite a few years. However, Smith shared,” I’ve worked at so many hospitals over the years. The sad thing is that most of them don’t even exist anymore. Remember West Park Hospital? That’s one of the hospitals where I also used to work.”

Working to help keep people healthy or to get them back to good health has always been a passion of Regina’s. She says she loved playing doctor and nurse when she was a little girl and that translated into her reality as an adult.

Regina Rhea Smith’s other passion was lifting up her community. For her, it started while she was still living in West Philadelphia, and she was drawn into politics as a Committee person.

The community worker/leader part of Regina Rhea Smith really began to shine when she made a move from West Philadelphia to the Allegheny West community of North Philadelphia.
