SAC gives Chester city officials, community stakeholders tour of project sites throughout community

Reading Time: 2 minutes

CHESTER, PA, September 14, 2021 — The Stormwater Authority of the City of Chester hosted a tour of several project sites for nearly two dozen people, including Mayor Thaddeus Kirkland, Chester City Councilmembers, a representative from Congresswoman Mary Gay-Scanlon’s office, Chester City Receiver Michael Doweary, and several other community stakeholders on September 7.

The group met at Martin Luther King Park near 6th and Engle Streets just before noon. The first stop of the day was to Veterans Memorial Park, located at 7th and Engle Streets. Here, tour attendees received updates about renovations made to the park, which included the removal of hundreds of gallons of rainwater overflow, the removal of debris near inlets and outfalls, installation of bio-retention rain ponds, and cleaning and restoration of dozens of catch basins in the area.

“It’s important that our community stakeholders and residents see the work SAC is doing,” stated Dr. Horace Strand, Executive Director of the Stormwater Authority of the city of Chester. “We have completed dozens of projects over the last five years and have several others that are ongoing or near completion. Each project focuses on creating a stronger infrastructure in the city which will enhance the quality of life for everyone now and in the future.”

The group also visited SAC project sites at 10th and Ward Streets, East 24th and Upland Streets, Chester High School, and Eyre Park. Back in September 2020, SAC completed the Eyre Park Trail Greenway Infrastructure Project. Renovations to this area included streets being narrowed and repaved and converted into a one-half mile-long walking path around the park. New Green infrastructure was also installed on both sides of the walking path, as well as new underground piping.

Additional Information:

Tour attendees included a diverse group of local, state, and federal officials and community partners from Chester City government, the state of Pennsylvania, the U.S. House of Representatives, Stormwater Authority of the city of Chester board members, and representatives from Delcora, Pennsylvania Environmental Council and Riverfront Alliance of Delaware County, Corvias Infrastructure Solutions, and Verna Harrison Associates, LLC.
