Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration at 40th & Lancaster Avenue MLK Memorial

Celebrate Dr. King, Jr.’s life, work, and accomplishments with neighbors at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bust located at 40th and Lancaster Avenue on Monday, January 17 from 10am to 1pm. The location is the site of Dr. King Jr.’s Freedom Now tour speech on August 3, 1965, with a crowd of 10,000 people in attendance.

Morning activities are organized by People’s Emergency Center (PEC). Philadelphia’s own Kenny Sykes will kick off the event with live music, performing until Noon. Giveaways include food, school supplies, winter accessories and toys (this last courtesy of The Hope and Healing Community Arts Project) Plus, free COVID testing will be available from PENN Medicine’s mobile team until 1pm.

At Noon, Redeemer Tabernacle Baptist Church and the 16th Police District will stop briefly at the memorial site during their annual Martin Luther King Day Freedom Now Peace Unity March. There will be a ceremony honoring Dr. King, Jr. until 1:30pm, when the procession will continue to the Lucien E. Blackwell Community Center for more festivities.
