On Saturday, May 20, Delaware County celebrated the Reentry Coalition Kickoff and Resource Fair, hosted at the Keystone First Wellness and Opportunity Center in Chester, Pa.
Early in 2020, Delaware County received a $15,000 grant from the Byrne Justice Assistance Fund, creating a strategic plan for reentry; committed to change and representation on all levels, the Reentry Coalition was initiated on December 15, 2020. The Delco Reentry consists of over 30 government agencies, businesses, nonprofits, and community partners, sharing the goal of supporting the transitioning of justice served individuals back into communities.
“The coalition works to address the issues of education, employment, treatment, mental health, mentorship, and housing of formerly incarcerated individuals.”, said Delaware County Council Chairperson Dr. Monica Taylor.
Taylor continued, saying, “It’s a county priority to prepare incarcerated people for entrance back into the community and give them the tools to become healthy and contributing members of society.
Research shows that good physical and mental health, housing, skill development, mentorship, social networks, and the collaborative efforts of public and private organizations collectively improve the reentry experience,” said Taylor.” If we don’t assist people with basic needs, we’re setting them up for failure and setting our community up as well.
Following the completion of a 10-year sentence, Johnathan King is now leading the charge for reentry in Delaware County and throughout the country. King believes that a person who’s been incarcerated is a “Justice Served Individual” …
