Redrawing some City Council Districts in 2022

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In last week’s edition of the SCOOP, in this Civics Column, I wrote about redistricting and what it means and how the U.S. Census affects redistricting. I also shared that a series of public zoom meetings would be happening, called Council Redistricting Community Input meetings–so citizens from Philadelphia could engage in the conversation about how they would want the new council districts to look. That’s called being a part of the process. It’s about being involved in what’s happening in the city where you live.

Currently, you may live in the 3rd council district. But after March of 2022, you might suddenly live in the 4th council district, yet you didn’t move. Your district map would have been redrawn. You may have been used to voting for a Jannie Blackwell for years until Jamie Gauthier came along, and then perhaps you voted for Gauthier in the 3rd council district. Come to the next council election–if the 3rd council district map is redrawn (like most seem to believe it will be) you might end up having to vote for Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr., or his opponent. Time will surely tell.
