Redistricting City Council Districts

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Just last week, my SCOOP Civics column was about redistricting and how and why it is done, and how the U.S. Census Count is such as critical part of the tie-in to redistricting. Then what happens? I get an email from my Publisher and Editor, Sherri Darden indicating that the City of Philadelphia council district maps may well be changing along with some other things. I knew redistricting was on the table. I guess it just didn’t hit me that it was going to happen right here in the city of Philadelphia.

I said it in last week’s column, and I’ll repeat myself now, every ten years, the federal government does a count, to get as good a count as they can, on how many citizens live in America and how many other people live here as well. The whole truth never gets told because some people absolutely refuse to participate in the census count when they are bonafide United States citizens. The City of Philadelphia has begun the process of redrawing the legislative maps and based on population, the maps of the West Philadelphia 3rd council district where Jamie Gauthier is currently the Councilperson, and the 4th council district where Councilman Curtis Jones is currently the councilman, could look different in the near future.
