Rebuilding Together Philadelphia repairs 10 homes in one weekend

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On Friday, October 6, 2023, Rebuilding Together Philadelphia and Wells Fargo teamed up to revitalize homes on the 200 block of N. Hobart Street in the Haddington neighborhood of West Philadelphia.

Over 50 volunteers from Wells Fargo came together and worked with RTP staff and community partner ACHIEVEability to accomplish repairs of ten owner-occupied homes on Hobart Street. The repairs included carpet removal and floor installation; installing grab bars, handrails, smoke, and CO2 detectors, fire extinguishers, house numbers, and solar-powered lights; and various repairs to make a home more energy-efficient. Before the October 6 workday, subcontractors provided roofing, plumbing, electrical, and structural improvements over several weeks to accomplish 25 health and safety standards.
Rebuilding Together Philadelphia received a $55,000 grant through the Wells Fargo Builds program to address these critical issues impacting the Philadelphia community. The grant is part of a larger $1.45 million donation to Rebuilding Together chapters around the country through the Wells Fargo Builds program to provide critical home repairs to up to 90 homes in 40 communities across the U.S.

This volunteer day is part of a Wells Fargo initiative called “Welcome Home.” Thousands of Wells Fargo employees across the country are working with local charities to make an impact in the company foundation’s funding priority, housing affordability. Throughout September and into early October, Wells Fargo employees participate in volunteer events like this one in West Philadelphia.

RTP is a nonprofit that revitalizes communities by transforming vulnerable owner-occupied houses into safe, healthy, and energy-efficient homes. RTP’s staff, subcontractors and 500 volunteers repair 125 homes a year. RTP’s Block Build strategy utilizes between 100 and 200 volunteers, neighbors, and homeowners per day to repair clustered homes in a targeted neighborhood over two days.

Rebuilding Together Philadelphia (RTP) is a local, independent affiliate of a national network focused on preserving affordable homeownership and revitalizing neighborhoods using volunteer resources and is celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2023. Through its repair projects, RTP has helped over 2,000 low-income homeowners since our founding. Visit www.rebuilding- philly.org or 215-965-0777 for more information. #BlockBuild
