Real Grown Folks

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s a civics thing. It’s the right thing to do, to be a good citizen. Voting is near the top of the list of being a good citizen. Voting is what real grown folks do.

Because we are in such a critical political campaign season much of my space for the Civics 101 column will be dedicated to sharing information about the various political seats that are up for grabs between now and May 16th. What makes this campaign cycle even more interesting and certainly more challenging is the fact that there are so many people who have entered the race for Mayor.

There are also so many people who have entered the race for City Council at Large seats. Then, don’t forget there is also the election for Sheriff and Registrar of Wills and for the (3) City Commissioners seats that are up for grabs.

It’s time now to really start thinking about who you might vote for, and I certainly hope you have every intention of voting. Grown folks, in my mind, are supposed to do the darn thing. You get yourself registered to vote, and on primary election day and on general election day, you vote. It’s as simple as that. I don’t understand how some people make voting seem like such a hard thing to do.

If you don’t educate yourself before an election, and then on Election

Day you go into the polling place to vote, it can be really bad. In those cases, usually, I think what an uninformed voter will do, is to just push the button for the party they are registered under. That can work in a General Election.

However, in a Primary Election, candidates who are of the same political party run against each other. Case in point, the 2023 mayoral race. The Primary Election in Pennsylvania is Tuesday, May 16, 2023, and we currently have (10) declared Democratic candidates who have announced they are in it to win it.

Thank goodness we now have the luxury of being able to choose to vote in person or to vote by mail. But bottom line, VOTE.
