PHILADELPHIA — School District of Philadelphia Superintendent William R. Hite, Jr., Ed.D., visited second-grade students at William D. Kelley Elementary School during Read Across America Week.
Dr. Hite and Principal Crystal Edwards, Ed.D. read The 1619 Project: Born on the Water, a lyrical picture book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and Newbery honor-winning author Renée Watson.
The picture book, written for young readers in grades second through fifth, chronicles the consequences of slavery and the history of Black resistance in the United States. The book will be the first of several books written by female authors read to students at the school in recognition of Women’s History Month.
