Queen Diva Trudy Haynes now At Rest

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The great Trudy Haynes has gone on home to glory. She was the first African American woman to land a television newsroom job in the history of the city of Philadelphia. She was a trailblazer, a newsmaker in her own right, and an activist for civil rights and women’s rights, particularly in T.V. newsrooms.

Trudy Haynes was special to our newspaper. So special in fact, that we honored her here at the SCOOP USA about four months ago. We did a spotlight on her life story in our newspaper. Our publisher, Sherri Darden, also had a beautiful award plaque made up for her to let her know how the SCOOP USA Team felt about her.

I recall that it was during that time frame that Sherri Darden noted to me that Miss Trudy’s health seemed to be declining. Whereas up until about five or six months ago, even after the pandemic, Miss Trudy was making an effort to come out a little bit and see people. Little did we all know that our original Philadelphia Queen Diva would be departing before the summer of 2022 officially started.

Trudy Haynes is the one who helped Sherri Darden expand “SCOOP Media” by showing Sherri how to go about setting up a radio program for SCOOP, which is broadcast on WWDB/AM.

Sherri reminisced, “We had a radio program called “The SCOOP and Trudy Show” on WWDB. It was a half-hour program, and it was broadcast on Thursday evenings. The show was on the air for about 8-months. If people go to the SCOOP YouTube channel, they can play the first show I did with Trudy. During that program, she really opened up to me–and shared how she became Trudy, her facts and opinion of being a black woman in the industry and how she felt like a lot of people had forgotten about her or didn’t know her story–since her official retirement from mainstream television, as a part of CBS-3. While the reality is that Trudy Haynes only retired from CBS-3 to keep working in media as the host of a cable television show and doing other special projects near and dear to her heart, she always still found time to mentor people like me.“
