Primary Election, Candidates for Philadelphia Register of Wills

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Ever so often, I like to circle back to why the publisher of the SCOOP Newspaper, Sherri Darden, decided to start printing a civics column. Sherri Darden, decided to start publishing a column on civics because she understands that civics, by and large, is not being taught in most schoolrooms across America, let alone in Philly. If anything, most students get a cursory glance over civics, not an entire semester of classes which would give a much clearer understanding of all that civics entails. Civics is so many things all wrapped up into one big ball.

In short, if I were to explain what civics means to me and what it is, I would say being a good citizen is being a civic-minded person.

That means you respect and care about your community, the street you live on, and your neighborhood. Being a good citizen means you actively participate in things that are important to your community and your city, state, and country.

It means when you turn 18 you get registered to vote. It means you vote on election day. I think being a good citizen means you obey the laws of the land.
