PhillyBeat: Membership to Phoenix Gym is 48 hrs of Sobriety

Reading Time: 4 minutes

There is so much going on in entertainment. Where do I start? From Johnathen Majors to the Phoenix gym coming to Philadelphia, there’s a lot I have to share with you.
Let’s start with the Tamron Hall Show. Shout out to Hall, who attended Temple University and lived in Philly for some time. Last week, her show featured Scott Strode, the founder of The Phoenix Gym—a safe, sober space to support recovery. He opened up about his own struggles with substance abuse and how exercise was the catalyst to his recovery.
The Phoenix takes a new approach to recovery by fostering healing through fitness and personal connection. They offer activities for everyone – from weightlifting and boxing to running, hiking, and yoga. All to help people grow stronger together, overcome the stigma of addiction, and rise to their full potential. The cost of membership is 48 hours of sobriety.
Since 2006, the Phoenix has helped more than 318,000 people across America rise above addiction and harness the power of self-transformation. What started as a solo project developed beyond his, he explained. A sober, active community of peers who support each other every day on the journey to recovery – that was what Phoenix began. Scott found hope in his own recovery while discovering how ice climbing helped all his problems, fears, and the shame of addiction melt away.
He recently appeared on Tamron Hall, promoting the new location in Philly near Temple University. Located at 126 Race Street in Philadelphia, The Phoenix offers a free, sober, active community to individuals who have suffered from a substance use disorder and to those who choose a sober life.
Using a peer support model, this program helps members heal and rebuild their lives while also eliminating stigma around recovery. This program provides Boxing, Climbing, CrossFit, Hiking and Camping, Skiing and Snowboarding, Yoga, and more.
If you are new to The Phoenix, the best way to get started is to attend an event. Events are listed on our events page and are open to anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. Before attending your first event, please complete our enrollment form on our website.
Hats off to you for supporting a clean and sober life.

Actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty in December of misdemeanor assault and harassment. The promising actor’s career came to a screeching halt after success with “Creed III” “Devotion” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Marvel Studios fired the actor.
It’s been questioned, how this franchise will handle the many variants of Kang the Conquerer in the upcoming Marvel movies. Thoughts of a recast with Colman Domingo, rumored to be the top contender for the role, could work. Remember, Don Cheadle is taking over as James Rhodes. War Machine from Terrence Howard, and Mark Ruffalo is taking over as Bruce Banner as The Hulk from Edward Norton.
In his first interview since a jury found him guilty of reckless assault and harassing his ex-girlfriend. Jonathan said, “I’m standing there, and the verdict comes down. I say, ‘How is that possible based off the evidence, based off the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence? How is that possible?” the actor told ABC News Live, Linsey Davis in an exclusive sit-down interview a month after his conviction.
“I’m really blessed. I’m surrounded by people who love me and who care about me. But this has been very, very, very hard, and very difficult, and confusing in many ways,” Jonathan said. “But I’m standing.” The actor will be sentenced this week; more on this case to come.

Congratulations to Keke Palmer, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Game Show for NBC’s “Password” – the first time the category has been part of the Primetime Emmys after moving from the Daytime awards.
She was up against some powerhouse hosts like Steve Harvey “Family Feud” and Pat Sajak for “Wheel of Fortune.” “Password” is exec produced by Jimmy Fallon, “Sharp, charming and quick-witted all while looking like a superstar. There’s no one like Keke Palmer,” said Fallon.
“In a historic year for game shows at the Emmy Awards, we couldn’t be prouder of Keke Palmer’s outstanding host win. She and Jimmy Fallon are a winning duo and have made the latest iteration of Password an undeniable hit,” added Corie Henson, EVP NBCUniversal Entertainment Unscripted Programming.

Taraji P. Henson has been known to surprise loved ones (like her housekeeper!) with home renovations. “The Color Purple” star recently reflected on a major project she did for her stepmother during a new episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, and it may make you tear up.
My stepmom is still alive, and when I go home to D.C., I still go to my dad’s house that she owns,” Henson said while chatting with actor and host Dax Shepard. “And I actually redid the house for her through [Houzz].”
She continued: “I did that for her because I was like, ‘Mama Angie, it’s time for you to have your house.’ It was still so much of my dad, and I got it. But my dad passed when I was 6, and when I did it for her, I said, ‘Because you give so much—she’s always opening the house and feeding and making sure everybody’s OK—I want to do something for you, and I want to give you a little feminine spin on the house. It’s time. You deserve it.’”

On Tuesday, the “Endless Love” singer was announced as the face of Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello’s new campaign — and the 79-year-old is breaking the internet with her timeless beauty. Diana Ross is bringing her icon status to a fun new fashion campaign!

Have you heard that exonerated “Central Park Five” member Yusef Salaam who was wrongly imprisoned as a teenager in the infamous rape case, won a seat last week on the New York City Council?
Salaam, a Democrat, will represent a central Harlem district on the City Council–having run unopposed for the seat in one of many local elections happening across New York State, he won his primary election in a landslide. “For me, this means that we can really become our ancestors’ wildest dreams,” Salaam said.
The victory comes more than two decades after DNA evidence was used to overturn the convictions of Salaam and four other Black and Latino men in the 1989 rape and beating of a white jogger in Central Park. Salaam was imprisoned for almost seven years.
