January 18, 2024–Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal announced the addition of a new crime-fighting tool in the Sheriff Department’s arsenal, which can be located on its website, allowing the public to submit tips that may aid in the capture of known criminal suspects. Bilal said, “The Warrant Unity Priority List is part of the community outreach strategy to get fugitives in custody safely and without incident by encouraging them to turn themselves in.”
Bilal flanked by Under-Sheriff Tyrek El Shabazz, District Attorney Larry Krasner, Lieutenant Hartman, and Captain Nobles, Head of the Warrant Unit, announced the new first-of-any-kind enhancement to the Warrant Unit’s website connected to Philly Sheriff.com. It’s a collaboration of the Sheriff’s Office, the Philadelphia Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and The Warrant Unit.
Per Captain Nobles, who heads up the Warrant Unit, the new tool is a way for the public to give information about wanted fugitives on our list or a tip without speaking to someone on the phone. It can now be done anonymously, by way of a cell phone or computer.
“All warrants are issued by the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Courts. We get requests for services from judges, probation officers, and tip callers. We also prioritize warrants where there is a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) involved. Charges vary from homicide to the delivery of narcotics, with each defendant having had prior warrant service, and each case has now reached the point where help from the public in finding the whereabouts fugitives to justice”, said Noble.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner expressed his pleasure with this new initiative, crediting Sheriff Bilal and her team for their efforts in putting this together. Krasner said, “I’m so impressed, excited, and supportive of this effort that in the very near future, we’re going to add the link to our website so that people who are on our website for another reason can access this information. They can not only see the faces of those individuals but be able to participate in the grassroots efforts.”
“This new feature is a part of our commitment to community policing and keeping our city safe,” said Bilal.
