Philadelphia Nursing Home Closes

Reading Time: < 1 minute

PHILADELPHIA, October 27, 2022–Yesterday, the last resident of the Philadelphia Nursing Home was transferred to a new facility. The more than 250 residents who were living in the Home at the time of the announced closure have now all been placed in safe and appropriate facilities and settings. This final transfer adhered to the City’s original plan to close the facility by October 28, 2022.

“While it is bittersweet to see the Nursing Home close, I am deeply thankful to the staff at the Nursing Home for their tireless efforts to ensure that the residents they cared for, for so long were able to find new living situations that meet their needs and preferences,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Cheryl Bettigole. “What they accomplished, safely placing more than 250 residents in less than four months, was a herculean task.”

As was prescribed by the state-approved plan, all residents and their families, advocates, and guardians, as appropriate, were paired with staff to identify facilities and settings that met the residents’ desires and were deemed appropriate for their required level of care. These efforts were bolstered by close partnerships with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Community Health Choices Managed Care Organizations, Community Based Organizations, the state and local Ombudsman offices, and Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The City provided support for Nursing Home staff in order to find new jobs, including opportunities at City Health Centers. Staff that worked as the facility was shutting down were provided with retention incentives.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is expected to tour the facility soon to ensure proper closure.

The facility and equipment will be liquidated according to City rules, while the land that the building sits on is owned by the state.
