Without question or a doubt, one of the worst days in American history was January 6, 2021. I still have moments when my brain doesn’t want to accept what went down, but we all know it did. More than 2,000 Donald Trump supporters converged on the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and in a rampage kind of a wave of discord, these people, some of whom wore MEGA hats or T-shirts (Make America Great Again), Donald Trump’s main campaign slogan in 2019 and 2020, showed their natural behinds. They charged the Capitol building and breached security, pouring into one of our country’s most important government buildings, reminiscent of how un-shepherded animals run through a field. It was crazy.
I wish I could honestly say I never thought anything like this would happen in America, but actually–particularly once Trump took the oath of office as the 45th president of the United States, the hate he spewed constantly was definitely going to bury itself into the minds of people who already had racist tendencies anyway. And that’s exactly what happened. Over the four years that Donald Trump occupied the White House, the number of hate crimes ticked up by leaps and bounds. As I sat and watched the cable news channels a year ago on January 6th, one of the thoughts that went through my mind was:
“This could turn into a Civil War.” Not a race war, a Civil War where perhaps Democrats and Republicans would split father than they ever have and draw lines, ending up on different “sides.”
