Notes on BlackFatherhood (part I)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

“The oppression or domination of a people is only secured when the cultural life of that people is destroyed, paralyzed or at least neutralized.” Amilcar Cabral

I am currently experiencing my ‘60th’ orbital rotation around the sun. Within that time period (on this planet called Earth), I have been truly blessed to experience the reward and gift of fatherhood. Not only am I grateful to have a strong son, I am grateful to have had a strong father! When young boys have examples of fatherhood and receive lessons of life throughout their adolescent years, they potentially adopt and embrace those valuable lessons. The traits fathers demonstrate are the traits that the child will learn and hopefully pass down to his child.

Love, warmth, strength, creativity, discipline, patience, and respect will create a loving, warm, strong, creative, disciplined, patient and respectful child. As Black men, our father is our first example of how to behave (or not) when it’s our turn–his voice of reason becomes our voice of consciousness when we are faced with serious and tough choices in life.

Today, the Black family is disconnected, and our communities face a difficult crisis.

“We were the builders of pyramids; now we destroy our own homes.

We reached high civilization through the dignified leadership of African Queens, and today, many Black men have become abusers of Black women. We introduced medicine and healing on the planet, and now we have become drug abusers and destroyers of our own lives. We descended from Black scientists who studied the heavens to become clowns who degrade ourselves to entertain white people.” Dr. Naim Akbar
