Usually, I write columns about some of the major local or national news stories of the week. It’s really exciting and rewarding work I get to do for the SCOOP USA Media Newspapers. Truly thankful for having an open-minded publisher (Sherri Darden). She allows all of us who write for her to spread our wings and fly. She doesn’t stand over your shoulder or over your computer, commanding and demanding, every two seconds. She trusts us to do our jobs and to make good judgment calls about what subject or subjects we will focus on each week.
While most of the time, you will find me writing about stopping the violence, activities of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity, the latest on the Philadelphia NAACP, Covid stories over and over and over, updates on what’s happening with the Biden Administration, and a lot of other important local and tri-state area news, sometimes I surprise our readers by writing a very “unexpected” kind of column.
Today, I’m putting the spotlight on a small Black Church in the heart of North Philadelphia, Greater Saint Luke Disciple of Christ Church. The church is located at 2124 W. Oxford Street (Beechwood and Oxford Streets). Bishop Thomas A. Patrick is the Pastor.
Greater Saint Luke Disciple of Christ Church is what many would describe as a “greying” church. That means the majority of the members are senior citizens and women. There are very few men there I am told.
Mrs. Mayfreda Watson, 88 years young, came into PA State Senator Sharif Street’s Office Monday, August 1st, on a mission. She made it clear that she needs help for her church. Henry Hunter, who is one of Senator Street’s right-hand men, and who works in the office of State Senator Street, brought it to my attention that the church (with its almost sixty members), all elderly, has experienced a few challenges since the pandemic, and as they move forward, they are asking for assistance from the community.
