Movie comes with a lot of controversy: The Book of Clarence

Reading Time: 3 minutes

“The Book of Clarence” starring LaKeith Stanfield is raising lots of eyebrows amongst viewers, and some are totally avoiding seeing the movie.

“The Book of Clarence” Stanfield stars in the dramedy as Clarence, the streetwise twin brother of Thomas (also Stanfield), one of Jesus’ 12 apostles, who envies the son of God and his followers’ celebrity in Jerusalem. Deeply afraid of being a “nobody,” he tries to become a 13th apostle, and when that fails, he and his pal Elijah (RJ Cyler) scheme to present Clarence as “the new Messiah” and repackages Jesus’ miracles as his own.

Netflix’s “The Harder They Fall,” British writer/director Jeymes Samuel has crafted another period reinvention set in the time of Jesus Christ – in theaters last Friday. The movie revisits Jerusalem in 33 A.D. through the lens of Black culture.

But moviegoers are not singing its praise. Folks are speaking out on Facebook about the controversial film. Here is what they are saying:
Marie said, “There were hustlers from the beginning of time. This is not about God. It is about using God for profit. Happens all the time.”
E. H. stated, “All get a grip. About all anyone needs from the Bible is the 10 commandments. Everything else was written by fallible men.”
Mr. Reynolds gave his recommendation: “Why don’t you just read the word and see what God has to say? Y’all opening doors that you will be sorry for in the end. GOD WILL NOT BE MOCKED!”
Evelyn explained: “It’s blasphemy! I was warned before this movie came out! Guard yourself. I will not be seeing this. The devil is a lie.”

While LaKeith plays the leading role, one viewer said, “He may be a great actor, but there should be limits to what they are putting out to the people! Gullible folks will go along with lies and blasphemy against the Lord and the Holy Spirit! Be careful what you allow in your spirit.”

Here is a little fun fact about one of the most famous youngsters in today’s time. Blue Ivy Carter (born January 7, 2012) is an American singer. She is the first-born daughter of musicians Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Two days after her birth, Time dubbed Carter “the most famous baby in the world.” That same day, her vocals were featured on the song “Glory,” by her father Jay-Z, which earned her a Guinness World Record for being the youngest person to have a charted song on any Billboard chart. She has been the subject of depictions in media, including impersonations on Saturday Night Live and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

In 2020, she was featured on “Brown Skin Girl,” a single by her mother Beyoncé, alongside Wizkid and Saint John. The song won her accolades, including an NAACP Image Award; the BET Her Award, making her the youngest winner of a BET Award; and a Grammy Award for Best Music Video for the same song, which earned her another Guinness World Record for being the youngest individually credited Grammy Award winner, and the second youngest overall.
