MLK Day of Service is Monday, January 17, and it is a great time to show your appreciation for Philly’s 150 Rec Centers and the Parks and Rec Heroes who keep them going. Rec Centers stepped up to feed their communities, serving as meal distribution centers in the early days of the pandemic, then providing meals at the Access Centers while all public schools were closed. And their meal service didn’t stop there: PPR staff distributed 1,003,496 meals through the summer meal program at day camps and PlayStreets, 51,526 meals through Older Adult Centers, 98,088 food boxes through 14 recreation centers and 45,049 meals, and 9,507 boxes through the Access Centers during the pandemic, providing crucial food access to families in need. There’s still time to sign up to help at these rec centers and parks on MLK Day. (Click on the links to go to the registration pages.): Cohocksink Rec is looking for help improving the facility inside and out; Parkside Evans Rec volunteers will clean up the grounds; Happy Hollow Rec is hosting a cleanup day; Finley Rec is having a cleanup in the morning and youth basketball games in the afternoon; and Cobbs Creek Park volunteers are cleaning up a section along the recreational path. Another way that you can show your appreciation for our Parks and Rec Heroes is to nominate your favorite Parks & Rec employee for the Mayor’s Day of Service Recognition Award. Nominations are accepted until January 31, though why not click here now to fill out the form! |
