PHILADELPHIA, December 11, 2024—Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, the Commissioner of Prisons, Michael R. Resnick, Esq and other key City officials honored the latest graduating class of Cadets (48 Correctional Officers) to the Philadelphia Department of Prisons (PDP) and swore in two new Deputy Commissioners Jeremy Nash, who will serve as Deputy Commissioner of Operations, and Morgen Jaco, as the Deputy Commissioner of Restorative and Transitional Services.

In addition, Commissioner Resnick announced the promotion of Xavier Beaufort from Deputy Commissioner to First Deputy Commissioner. Beaufort is the Department of Prisons’ first First Deputy Commissioner in approximately 25 years.

This class of Cadets is confirmed to be the largest to join the PDP in almost 10 years. Supporting Mayor Parker’s goal to create a Safer, Cleaner, and Greener with economic opportunity for all, the Department of Prisons is making strides to help meet that goal by ensuring greater safety and order within correctional facilities.

“I am honored to be a part of this ceremony and proud of our Cadets who will serve as the backbone of our prison facilities,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “This is a big deal – this is a super big deal, and I need families here today to be loving on your Cadet like you never have before. We want them to stay – we need your support.”

The 48 graduates mark the end of a year that has seen a total of 228 Cadets trained at the PDP in 2024. In 2023, 123 Cadets completed the Training Academy, and now, with a new class of 56 Cadets underway, PDP is seeing growth in numbers, which means growth in all areas.

“We are delighted to have nearly 50 Cadets joining the ranks of the Philadelphia Department of Prisons correctional staff. Cadet Class 20-05 indicates that the efforts to grow the staff are working and inspiration to redouble our efforts,” said Michael R. Resnick, Commissioner of the Philadelphia Department of Prisons. “We are also pleased to swear in Mr. Nash and Ms. Jaco as our Deputy Commissioners, who collectively bring over 40 years of outstanding work in law enforcement and corrections. I am also so proud to promote Xavier Beaufort to First Deputy Commissioner.”

Commissioner Resnick also announced that to accommodate the growing sizes of Cadet classes, the PDP has opened a larger, state-of-the-art Training Academy on the State Road campus to replace the smaller site on the grounds of the former Holmesburg Prison. The Training Academy will be fully moved into the new site by the end of the year.
