The “M” in Master Mind the Hustle stands for mentoring. Over the next couple of months, I will reveal the acronym for “ Master Mind the Hustle” with the hope that the knowledge will revolutionize, reset, re-evaluate, remerge, and reinvent our post-pandemic mindset. Although we are all in a space of unpredictable, unprecedented, we must continue to cling to our purpose.
That is hard to do when you hear multiple reports about the possibility of the world shutting down again due to the continued spreading of the virus. Regardless of what has happened or what will happen, the universal law of sowing and reaping says, “there is an output for every input.” What you are reaping today represents what you sowed in the past. I must admit that all that I have accomplished over my lifetime was the result of my sickening work ethic, the ability to mastermind the hustle, and my mentors.
The “M” in “Master Mind the Hustle” stands for Mentoring. I have some mentors in my head that I will never meet like Mary McLeod Bethune, W.E.B Dubois, Sarah Lecount, and John Dewey. However, I use their philosophies in my decision-making process sometimes. I also have several (Real-Time) mentors that have allowed me to tap into their existing knowledge, experience, and skills. My mentors keep me accountable for my purpose and goals. They assist me in exceeding my goals and becoming the best version of myself. Mentors help you achieve your goals, challenge you, and make you think outside the box while cutting your learning curve.
Benjamin Franklin, one of my mentors in my head stated, “Tell me, and I forget, teach me, and I may remember, involve me, and I learn.” Mentors provide knowledge and information while assessing what needs to be improved. They find ways to help you professionally and personally grow and encourage you to keep going. My mentors gave me a lot of tough love while being my sounding board for all my ideas. They serve as trusted advisors. I would not have made it through the pandemic without constant mentorship.
I had the pleasure of being a mentor to a few mentees in the Philadelphia Youth Leadership Council Program, and we had our closing ceremony last weekend. We closed out this last phase so we can reach new depths. If you have been following this column you realize that I have been teaching throughout the pandemic virtually in person. Some children have started, continued, or expanded their businesses during the pandemic. We have provided them with the resources that they need to become successful and will continue to do so. I say “we” because there is no “I” in team. I’m so thankful and grateful for my team.
The Young Entrepreneurs “my mentees” got the chance to meet my mentor. Everyone needs a mentor. I know we often think we know it all, but if you are the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. My mentor has assisted my mentees with advice, donations, and resources.
I would not be where I am today if it was not for my “Mentors.” So a big shout-out to Mentors Michael Rice, Coach Tony Branch, Dr. Leslie Grace, and mentees Denim Stanbeck, Cameron Rozier, Aunistee Williams, and Katelyn Carter.
Mentors assist with Thinking the UNTHINKABLE, Believing the UNBELIEVABLE, and proposing the IMPOSSIBLE. Don’t shoot for the stars, shoot for the moon because that’s what the CHOSEN do. Remember there can be no progress without struggle. Beware of the DREAM STEALERS and become aligned with DREAM CATCHERS.
