No stranger to our area or the entertainment industry, Marcus Cleavon Smith is celebrating the release of his third single entitled, “God’s Got It.” Known to the world as Brother Marcus he was a powerful addition to Praise 107.9 FM Urban One family in Philadelphia. Brother Marcus has been on the airwaves for more than 15 years and is currently on Philly’s Favor 100.7FM and 99.5HD3.
His previous two singles, “THE TRAIN” and ‘”OVER” were well received and entered the Billboard charts. “The Train” made the official ballot for consideration for the Grammy’s in 2019.
Brother Marcus’s “God’s Got It” single serves as an inspirational head-bopping song that encourages the listener to know that whatever we want and need, God is more than capable to grant our request. The song, released on the sixth anniversary of his mother’s passing, is a constant reminder that we must allow the Lord to work on our behalf.
We chatted with Marcus to get more information about him and his journey.
Sherri: Tell us how this new single differs from the other two you released and what makes it so special to you?
Marcus: It’s very different because I didn’t write it. LOL. I just had an idea and reached out to some people I really wanted to work with and they brought it all together.
Sherri: What is the overall message you want listeners to hold onto from this single?
Marcus: I want the listener to know God is real, and we must trust him at his word. We must remember God owns it all so whatever we may want and need God’s Got it.
Sherri: Since the pandemic hit last year what have you done to stay busy and relevant in the industry?
Marcus: I can honestly say I have been praying and reflecting more on what I need to do Versus what I want to do. As far as industry, I have been helping artists get deals and supporting them, and getting them ready for this business. Also, I have been assisting others in secure radio shows, hosting gigs, segments to securing interviews on the radio. I’ve been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work.
Sherri: How has music production and opportunity changed over the years from your point of view?
Marcus: To sum it all up. You can do it yourself. BUT you can’t do it all alone.
Sherri: When did you realize that making music was something you were going to embark upon and why now?
Marcus: I’ve always wanted to make records, and I just kept talking about it, and my wife said instead of talking about it just do it and do it for yourself and not to please people. So I just went for it, and the first single made some noise. That first single was called THE TRAIN.
Sherri: Who are your major influences in the music industry or in life that help shape your craft or center your goals?
Marcus: In the music business from Pastor Shirley Caesar, Stevie Wonder, Doobie Brothers, Switch, GUY, The Gap Band, Kirk Franklin, Fantasia, LL COOL J, Brian McKnight, Kenny Rogers, NAS, Simon and Garfunkel, Patti LaBelle, The Large Professor and so many more. There is someone who has been a mentor to me over the years, and that’s Norman Caldwell. He has kept me grounded and challenged me to be and do better.
Sherri: How has this industry changed you to become the man you are?
Marcus: I won’t say it changed me; however, it has made me focus more on what is really important in this business.
Sherri: What would you like to see evolve in your ministry over the next 1-2 years?
Marcus: More people coming to the Lord and being saved as well as helping others by sharing resources to make life better for others.
Sherri: What is your favorite scripture or mantra, and why?
Marcus: Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. John 3:16 For God so Love the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him will have eternal life. Why these scriptures? Simply because these are God’s promises over my life. I can do everything with him, and I’ll be with him someday in Glory. For me, that’s what’s exciting.
