The Super Bowl of Mount Calvary

Reading Time: 4 minutes

The Super Bowl is without a doubt the most popular sports event in the world, this year we have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers going against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In a sense the 1st Super Bowl took place over 2,000 years ago. The stadium was a hill called “Calvary” and it was located outside the city of Jerusalem.

It was a contest between a sneaky old champion known as Mr. Death and the Champion of Righteousness known as Jesus Christ. Old Satan, the devil himself, coached Mr. Death for the two of them work hand in hand. Jesus also had a coach, who was His Father, the Almighty God who created the heavens and the earth. Just as there is a good relationship between death and Satan there is also good relationship between Jesus and The Father Almighty.

We all know that on the night before the big game the contestants are supposed to be in bed getting a good night’s rest, but Coach Satan saw to it that Jesus had to stay up all night long. He got into some folk and aroused their hostility to such an extent that they carried Jesus from one judgment hall to another, from midnight to six o’clock Friday morning. They still would not give Him any rest. They put him on the witness stand in a pre-game trial and although the judge found Him innocent of the charges, He still underwent a severe beating. At the conclusion of the trial Jesus, was placed into the custody of four Roman soldiers who took a wooden goal post and put it on His shoulder and made Him carry it all the way out to the stadium.

When they arrived at the stadium it was time for the game to begin. The soldiers forced Jesus to lie down upon the wooden goal post and right then and there the Super Bowl on Mount Calvary began. The ringing of the hammer was tantamount to the sounding of the whistle for the opening kickoff. As soon as the first nail pierced the blessed hand of Jesus, Mr. Death took the ball and started his offensive strategy. Every time Mr. Death would get ready to score, Jesus would call “Time Out.” He decided to use the clock in His favor.

On His first “Time Out,” He asked His Father to forgive the noisy cheerleaders and screaming fans that were rooting against Him, for they know not what they do.

On His second, “Time Out,” He put Mr. Death on hold and made him stand in his tracks while He saved the soul of a dying sinner.

On His third, “Time Out,” He told John to take His mother home and take care of her.

On the fourth “Time Out”, He needed to have a conference with His Coach but when He looked up, He couldn’t see His face. He cried out in desperation “My God, My God! Why have Thou forsaken Me?” This took so much strength out of Him that He had to call another “Time Out” and ask for a drink of water, but instead of water they gave Him a sponge filled with vinegar.

At this point Mr. Death was moving closer and Jesus knew that He only had two “Time Outs” left so He called one of them and made an announcement. He said, “It is finished!” Having said that He called the final “Time Out” and said, “Father, into Thy hands I commend My Spirit!” When Mr. Death heard that and then saw Jesus hang His head in the locks of his shoulders, he thought that the game was over and that he was the winner. But before he could celebrate there was a tremendous power failure. The lights went out all over the stadium and to add to the confusion the earth began to tremble. Now during the confusion, Mr. Death fumbled the ball and Jesus recovered it and carried it to Joseph’s tomb.

Thinking that Jesus had surrendered and that the game was over, Mr. Death called Mr. Grave and the two of them got together for a weekend celebration. The party started on Friday night and lasted all the way thru Saturday night. But early Sunday morning, they saw a stone being rolled away and there was Jesus with the ball in His hands.

Mr. Death tried to take it away, but Jesus still armed him and said, “O Death where is thy sting?” Then Mr. Grave tried to take it, but Jesus gave him the same treatment and said, “O Grave where is thy victory?” Then as Jesus crossed the goal line. He spiked the ball on the turf and said, “All Power In Heaven and Earth Is Given Unto Me!”

And I want you to know that Because He made a touch down:

The Wages of Sin is Death but the Gift of God is Everlasting Life. Because of His Touch Down Heaven won the game. And one of these days all the fans of Jesus are going to get together for an everlasting celebration. That is why the songwriter wrote:

When we all get to heaven What a day of rejoicing that will be When we all see Jesus We’ll sing and shout the victory!
