Thanksgiving is over and most of us are preparing for Christmas, but in the wrong way because we have the wrong conception of what Christmas is all about.
What does Christmas mean to you? To some folk it means hard work. The stores are crowded with shoppers, the post office is overflowing with mail and the trains, buses and planes are carrying record crowds. To some Christmas means that Santa is coming with his sleigh full of goodies.
Then to some Christmas means a visit home. Surely this is the best time of all the year to be with family and friends. To some people Christmas is a time of sorrow, loneliness and sad memories. They look back over the year and think of the loved ones who have left them since last Christmas. Then to some Christmas means its party time.
Then there are millions of people for which Christmas means nothing. They do not know Jesus. They could care less about the Christmas season and December 25th, for them it’s just another day!
Now, if Christmas is to be right we must first make room for Jesus! When Mary and Joseph came to the inn, the innkeeper said, “We have no room for you.” My father’s children, this man missed Christmas and all of its meaning. He had many guests in his hotel, but they were soon gone and forgotten. If he had allowed Jesus to be born there this would have changed his hotel and his whole life.
Today, this Christmas season there are people saying, “I have no room for Jesus” Their hearts and lives are filled with other things. But if we are to have a Christmas that will be pleasing unto God, we must throw out all else and make room for Jesus!
This means not only the sins of the flesh, but also the sins of the disposition. The sin that causes us to treat folk wrong. And we all know wrong when we do it. You know, if you’re treating folk right. Maybe you are envious of someone. Maybe you hate someone. Maybe you have been unfaithful to your husband or wife or a friend. Maybe you have always caused trouble and discord. Maybe you have been talking and gossiping about folk behind their back. Maybe you have an unforgiving spirit towards someone. Maybe you still can’t stand the Pastor? We can have a wonderful experience this Christmas in our lives, in our homes, on our Jobs and in our churches if we would cast everything evil out of our hearts.
Yes, we should make this a Christmas that is pleasing unto God our Father by making room for Jesus. Make room by treating folk right! Make room by worshiping God! Make room by giving of yourself to help others!
Those of us who have traveled the highways of this country have at one time or another seen the sign “No Vacancy” on the front of hotels and motels. And some of us have hung out the same sign so far as Jesus is concerned.
We have said to him, “There is no room here for you”. My heart is all filled up. Go away!” Think about it, “No Room for Jesus!” That is like an engine saying, it has no room for the steam. That is like a tree saying that it has no room for the sap. That is like an ocean saying that it has no room for the tide. That’s like the heavens saying that they have no room for the stars. That’s like the garden saying that it has no room for the flowers.
O’ beloved we’ve got to make room for Jesus if we are to capture the True meaning of Christmas.
And I want you to know that, when you make room for Jesus, you’ll realize that Christmas means that our Savior is born!
-Born to set an example on how to live.
-Born to die for our sins.
-Born to be raised for our justification.
-Born to ascend on high, look low and make intercession for us.
-Born to give hope to us that one day by and by we’ll reach that land where the wicked will cease from troubling and the weary shall be at rest!
