Lou and Choo Street renaming

Reading Time: < 1 minute

On Saturday, October 5, 2024, Philadelphia City Councilwoman Cindy Bass made sure a long-awaited street sign–renaming took place at 21st and Hunting Park Avenue. The street was renamed Lou and Choo Way. Two young men who had a dream to become bar owners and did exactly that back in 1984. They successfully operated Lou and Choos until they sold the successful business in 2015.

Lou Crump and Charles Franklin (Lou and Choo) took their bar business and made it a major success in Philadelphia. It became a destination point for residents and visitors from out of town for many years. Lou and Choo were also well known for holding fundraisers at their establishment any time there was an emergency in Philadelphia, such as a family losing everything they owned in a fire, or when a father murdered his wife, leaving seven children behind, or times like when police officers or fighters have lost their life in the line of duty, you could always depend on Lou and Choo’s to be amongst the first local businesses to offer to host a fundraiser. When a little league team needed new uniforms or a basketball team needed some equipment, Lou and Choo’s owners would come to the rescue.

Some 200 people came out to witness the street sign being unveiled, and many in attendance all agreed that Lou Crump and Charles Franklin were very deserving of this honor.
