JOY COLLECTIVE AND DOVE WIN BEST SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR FOR ITS INSPIRATIONAL WORK ON THE CROWN ACT FROM CYNOPSIS BEST OF THE BEST 2021 #PASSTHECROWN |
NEW YORK, NY – (FEB. 28, 2022) – Black and women-owned, polycultural, full-service agency JOY Collective is thrilled to announce it has received the award for Best Social Justice Awareness Campaign for their work on the CROWN Act with Dove. This marks the second year in a row the CROWN Act has received this honor. Cynopsis Best of the Best Awards salute excellence; winning a Cynopsis trophy is an acknowledgement from peers – and from the leading B2B digital publications in our industry — that our work has risen to the top in entertaining and enriching a broad audience. The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) was created out of a need to provide legal protections against race-based hair discrimination which affects Black women, men, and children. Since its inception in 2019, the CROWN Act has impacted the lives of 19 million Black people in the 14 states and 34 municipalities that have passed the CROWN Act legislation or laws inspired by the CROWN Act. “We are thrilled to receive this tremendous honor for the second year in a row,” echoed Kelli Richardson Lawson, Founder + CEO and Orlena Nwokah Blanchard, President and COO, JOY Collective. “As Black women, we personally know the critical importance of advancing racial equity and inclusion at all levels of society. We are proud to have birthed this movement with Dove and the CROWN Coalition to end race-based hair discrimination with the CROWN Act because we are changing lives – that’s why we do this!” “This award for the 2nd year in a row signals that people are paying attention and not willing to sit idle. We have successfully passed the CROWN Act in 14 states, but we still have a lot more work to do,” said Kelli. The co-creators of the CROWN Coalition: Esi Eggleston Bracey (Dove/Unilever), Kelli Richardson Lawson, Orlena Nwokah Blanchard, and Adjoa B. Asamoah are helping to end hair discrimination and affecting the kind of change that will provide Black Americans the freedom to show up authentically in workplaces and schools without judgement or consequence. We encourage everyone to get involved and help the CROWN Act move forward by signing the petition and learn more about resources for anyone who has experienced hair discrimination.
