Legendary Black History Icon Rev. Dr. Evelyn C. Graves made a Positive Difference where she was planted

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I called Dr. Cassandra Graves on January 31st in the hopes of catching up with her at a time when she wasn’t super busy so that I could interview her about her mother, Rev. Dr. Evelyn C. Graves. After all, it’s Black History Month, and one of the charges our SCOOP Publisher Sherri Darden gave me was to write some columns this month about some icons in Black History.

Mind you, Dr. Cassandra Graves had reached out to me, a couple of weeks earlier, asking if I might consider spotlighting one of the positive young people who had graduated from Evelyn Graves Christian Academy, and who still comes around to volunteer with them weekly when they give away food to families in need. While I wanted to spotlight this young man, my heart and my head were telling me, “Do a column about Dr. Evelyn Graves for Black History Month. She should be one of the people you write about.” Dr. Cassandra Graves sounded fine when we began speaking, but about 60 seconds into our conversation, she shared with me the sad news that her mother, Dr. Evelyn Graves, had passed the day before, and it was not yet public knowledge. Cassandra Graves said, “I was in the pulpit preaching when our mother passed. I received an emergency note that said I needed to get home right away. That’s how my Sunday went.”
